Two NYC Health + Hospitals Receive “A” Safety Grades From Independent, National Hospital Safety Organization
Approximately 3,000 hospitals nationwide are graded
New York, NY
NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that Metropolitan and Queens Hospitals earned an ‘A’ Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for spring 2022. This national distinction recognized the two hospital’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital. NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens is the only hospital in the borough of Queens to receive an “A.” The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system.
“This national distinction is a true testament of the tireless work and commitment from our entire team in keeping our patients safe,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan CEO Cristina Contreras, LMSW, MPA, FABC. “We truly value the trust that our patients place in us when they choose to come to Metropolitan to receive care and are committed to providing them with the highest quality care. Although we’ve had to pivot a lot during the pandemic, achieving an A grade from Leapfrog, along with our recent designation as a Million Hearts Hospital by the C.D.C. and C.M.S., illustrates that patient safety remains the highest priority for everyone at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan.”
“I am extremely grateful that NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens has received an ‘A’ grade in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade’s Spring 2022 survey, as it is reflective of the spirit of teamwork taking place here every day,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens CEO Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE. “The fact is, everyone at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens plays a key role in the quality of care we provide our patients, and it is reassuring when the results of this hard work are recognized by others. This news is especially satisfying for our patients, who entrust us with their care. They can enter our doors knowing that, in accordance with Leapfrog’s methodology, we are one of the safest hospitals in the city. That is very good news for the people of Queens.”
The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections as well as systems that hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Metropolitan and Queens hospitals for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and that one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”
