The Anti-Life Equation Might Be Able to Infect Lantern Technology

The longer the undead army goes unopposed, the more power it seems to gain. Aside from acquiring the new gods and then later an undead Supergirl, DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #2 (by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Andy Lanning, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte) only added to their arsenal by giving them control over Warworld, and an undead Darkseid with a yellow lantern ring. However, the full capabilities of the anti-life virus have yet to be explored. After conquering the Warworld’s technology, it may be possible to infect lantern rings.

This creates a disturbing number of possibilities for how the war may go. The rings are all connected to the central battery that powers them, but if one individual ring could be corrupted, it could mean that even the central battery may not be safe. The heroes are already on a significantly weaker footing, losing any resources, big or small, could shift the tide firmly in favor of the anti-life.

Right from the start, the anti-life virus has been an infection unlike anything else in the DC Universe. It does not discriminate between organic or technological systems when it comes to its victims. As such, the virus can spread at rates impossible to trace before it is too late. However, until now readers only got to see how this affects Earth-0-based technology. Televisions and phones seemed to be easy for it to corrupt, but now it has been shown to easily infect and overcome far more advanced technologies.

The mother boxes, for example, living computers tied to the Source itself, fell to the anti-life virus’ influence, shifting their powers in favor of the undead. Taking over Warworld was its next great accomplishment, seizing control over one of the deadliest weapons in the universe. If it could do all of that, then infecting a lantern ring should be easy. Darkseid has yet to do so, but it may be because he doesn’t feel the need yet. Perhaps he will wait until he has more lanterns under his dominion before corrupting the rings.

All that aside, there is an even greater problem to worry about — the possible vulnerability of the central battery. It is a form of technology, one that links all the lantern rings. If Darkseid manages to infect it, then theoretically it could infect all lanterns across the universe at once. This could turn one of the best remaining defenses against the undead on a galactic scale into a weapon against the living.

The anti-life virus dilemma could also be the Black Lantern Corps’ introduction into this reality. An army of undead lanterns, supplementing Darkseid’s already considerable forces. They might in turn be able to raise the dead themselves, not through mere infection, but by actually animating corpses to serve as soldiers. Hopefully, the surviving heroes will rally together and figure something out before any of these scenarios play out. However, given how dark this series is so far, that seems very unlikely.
